Alchemists live and breathe their field of study, often putting their own lives on the line for the sake of discovery. Regardless of their goals, alchemy takes severe dedication to learn even the most basic aspects. They specialize in mixing the right chemicals and how to carefully enchant them to drastically alter or improve their effects, though to master this fine art typically takes countless years of theoretical study and a lifetime of practice. To manifest your own magic through that which you have crafted with your very own hands is the way of the alchemist, and is what separates them from wizards and sorcerers. Those who do are the true master alchemists. Few are those that have the capacity to develop the strange talent of imbuing their own products with arcane power, however. Studious and meticulous, alchemists are those who dedicate their entire lives to the craft of complex substances, be they poison, medicine, or something else entirely. Later, when goblins invade only to be met by an assault of blasts that paints the streets in crimson, no complaints can be heard. Exasperated neighbors shout towards the elf's workshop. Khaby Lame speaks at an Italian Tech Week event on September 24, 2021, in Turin, Italy. She also believes his content resonates with people because he rose to fame during a time when the world was on lockdown from quarantine. They appear organic and use simple actions and imagery to convey humor, which boosts his authenticity and reinforces his point about making life less complicated, Ferraz said. Unlike some other social media stars, Lame’s videos are not overproduced. His stoic facial expressions have also turned him into a meme star – with his face reposted in reaction videos on social media. “They know I’m the one who solves problems so they tag me or mention me and they’re like, ‘Khaby it’s your turn, solve this problem because we need you,’” he said. Lame’s deadpan humor has attracted fans from all over the world, who regularly send him videos of people performing simple tasks in complicated ways. He sends a message that life need not be complicated “His exasperation is relatable, and feelings are universal.” “You don’t need to speak to be seen or understood,” said Christina Ferraz, founder of Houston-based marketing agency Thirty6five. One marketer says the popularity of Lame’s videos show how nonverbal communication can transcend language barriers and make connections across cultures. “Maybe because my facial expressions are funny and they make people laugh, this simplicity makes people laugh and I love it,” Lame said. These silent but expressive reactions have made him one of the most recognizable digital creators on social media. Sometimes he throws in an eye roll or a shake of the head. After his common-sense approach to a task, Lame extends his arms with his palms facing upward, as if to say duh. His reactions personify the term “shaking my head,” or SMH in internet shorthand. In another, he reacts to a video of a woman noisily peeling a cucumber with her teeth by using a vegetable peeler to accomplish the same task. In one video, Lame peels a banana with his hands in response to a video of someone gingerly slicing open a banana with a cleaver. And gradually, a surprising career was born.Īt first, like a lot of TikTokers, he created clips of himself dancing, watching video games or doing comedy stunts. One day, he downloaded TikTok and started tinkering with it in his bedroom, posting videos of himself under the name Khaby Lame. He spent his days holed up at his parents’ home in Chivasso with his three siblings, looking for other jobs. Without question, the two songs he contributed – Helpless and Country Girl – are both excellent, but I’ve always imagined that they would have been more at home on one of Young’s subsequent solo albums – either After the Goldrush or Harvest. I’ve always questioned whether Neil Young’s contributions to the album sit quite as comfortably with the album’s concept as do those of his bandmates. Of course, a key attraction of that glorious debut album was the trademark harmony singing, and, on Déjà Vu, Crosby, Stills and Nash deliver more – much more – of the same. Add to that Crosby’s classic period piece – Almost Cut My Hair and the title track, Déjà Vu, Nash’s sweet but wonderful Our House and Teach Your Children and the simmering version of Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock which, even after 50 years, seems to improve with every hearing and you’ve already got a great album. Stills, in particular, was on great form and his songs – notably opening track Carry On and the stunning 4+20 – rank easily amongst the best of his prolific career. But, as always, it was the music that mattered, and Déjà Vu delivered a bucketload of great songs, many of which sit comfortably amongst the best that the partnership ever produced. It was released in March 1970 and was the eagerly anticipated and awaited follow-up to the eponymous Crosby, Stills and Nash album of May 1969, an album packed to the rafters with everything from counterculture anthems (Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Long Time Gone), apocalyptic science fiction (Wooden Ships) and even a fluffy pop hit (Marrakesh Express.) The original line-up of that first album had been augmented, by Neil Young (who was named as a partner in the combo) and by Greg Reeves (bass) and Dallas Taylor (drums) who weren’t. So why all the fuss? Déjà Vu is, without doubt, a fantastic, all-time classic album. The original album is included in pristine form, both on an 180-gram vinyl LP and on a CD, plus there are 3 further CDs covering, respectively, demo versions of songs that made it onto Déjà Vu and songs that emerged on members’ solo albums, out-take versions of a whole range of songs and, finally, a disc of alternative versions of the Déjà Vu songs (including a couple of really corking versions…). Crowe’s notes recount the making of the album through stories, told by those who were there. The whole thing is presented in a 12 x 12 hardcover book, illustrated with photographs, many of which have been rarely published, and annotated by writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe. So what’s new with this deluxe reissue? First of all, the presentation of this package is utterly sumptuous. It still gets regular turntable time, and I’ve never tired of any of the album’s ten tracks. It’s an album that I’ve owned, in various formats, for most of its long existence. Of course, Déjà Vu is one of the undisputed all-time classics an album that is almost certainly familiar to the vast majority of At The Barrier’s readers and which is fondly revered by most of that majority. CSNY’s magnum opus, Deja Vu, gets the 50 th anniversary deluxe reissue treatment – with a treasure trove of alternative versions and works in progress Photos of Hitler early in the war show a sweeping handlebar mustache, which, with the introduction of gas warfare, was impracticable for a good seal of a gas mask, resulting in the shaving down to the 'Toothbrush' style he would be remembered for. The most common explanation for the origin of Hitler's style of facial hair was that he initially adopted it at the Front in WWI. The Hitler 'stache, or more neutrally the Toothbrush Mustache is one of the most recognizable aspects of his visual identity, but it wasn't all that unique.
